High-Growth Social Media Strategy

2011 - 2013

Company: BroadbandTV Corp. & CTV British Columbia

Role: Social media, online news team (record website traffic nationally)

Tools: Hootsuite, Twitter, Facebook Ads & Insights, Reddit, Shortstack, Trendsmap

As the first Social Media Co-ordinator for the official broadcaster for the 2010 Winter Olympics, CTV British Columbia, I worked with veteran anchors and reporters to reach record national website traffic in one month in June 2011. I got #ctvbc trending for seven days on Twitter during the Stanley Cup Riots in Vancouver, BC working quickly in a high-stress environment with the Online News team. Other memorable moments were those long red-eye hours tweeting about the 2011 Federal Election, Japan Earthquake and Vancouver Canucks games alert to the constant chatter in the newsroom. The words from the News Director at the time on my second week on the job still ring in my ears: "If you tweet one wrong word, we'll get a lawsuit". By the end of eight months, I grew the social media following to 16,000 followers when we first started the Facebook and Twitter accounts.

As the Social Media Specialist at 2012's Most Innovative Company in BC, I managed six different sub-brands, including the gaming community. I grew the community to 16 times its following by engaging social media contests with brands including SONY, Disney Canada and Square Enix. I also worked closely with YouTube partners in our network and used Facebook Ads to promote trending content I found on Reddit as well.
